The Fight to Save Kobe Bryant’s Mural: Anna D. Smith Joins the Cause
From Silicon Valley to LA: Anna D. Smith’s passionate plea to save an iconic mural.
Anna D. Smith’s Perspective
As Anna D. Smith, founder of Anna D. Smith Fine Art and Real Estate Broker based in Silicon Valley, I’ve always admired the cultural richness and diversity of Los Angeles. I am deeply concerned about the potential removal of an iconic mural in Los Angeles that pays tribute to the LA Lakers legend, Kobe Bryant. This mural is more than just a painting; it’s a symbol of LA’s love and respect for a legend. Over 70,000 individuals have already shown their support by signing the petition, and even Vanessa Bryant, Kobe’s wife, has urged people to join the cause. Though I reside in Silicon Valley, I stand with them in this cause. Will you?
In my newly released book on Amazon, Anna D. Smith Fine Art and Real Estate Broker: 2023 Underground Art Market Report, I delve into the intricacies of the Los Angeles City Ordinance §22.119, titled “Original Art Murals on Private Property.” Los Angeles, a city that once grappled with graffiti and ultimately embraced it, established this ordinance. If a property owner grants an artist permission to create art on their property, the artist can register their masterpiece with the City of Los Angeles under this ordinance. The Covenant of the ordinance ensures that even a change in property ownership cannot lead to the removal of the artist’s work. It bewilders me why this isn’t being leveraged by the artist and the family to protect the mural.

I am heartbroken by the decision to erase a mural that holds such significance in Downtown Los Angeles. This mural is not just art; it’s a beacon of hope, unity, and resilience for LA. I implore the property owner to recognize its value and let this tribute remain untouched.
1. Cultural Significance:
This mural, showcasing Kobe and Gianna Bryant, has become a cornerstone of the LA community. It encapsulates their monumental contributions to basketball and their steadfast commitment to philanthropy and empowering the next generation. To remove it would be to strip LA of a vital piece of its soul.
2. Community Healing:
The untimely demise of Kobe Bryant left a void in the hearts of many in Los Angeles. This mural has been a source of comfort for those mourning his loss and a space for fans to come together in remembrance. Its removal would disrupt the healing journey the LA community is on.
3. Inspiration for Youth:
Kobe Bryant was more than a basketball player; he was a beacon of inspiration for youth everywhere. By preserving this mural, we ensure that his indomitable spirit, work ethic, and dedication to excellence continue to motivate the leaders of tomorrow.
I urge those in charge to rethink their decision and protect the Kobe and Gianna Bryant mural. In doing so, we not only honor their legacy but also provide comfort to a community in mourning, inspire our youth, and preserve a significant cultural touchstone in Los Angeles.
